Climate Change "The Big Ask"
Together we've done it!
A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us on our Big Ask campaign. Together we have finally got a strong Climate Change Law.
Parliament voted on 28 October for the world-beating legislation after a 3 and a half year campaign by Friends of the Earth. The first of its kind in the world, the Law is a huge step in the fight against climate change.
The Law commits the Government to 80 per cent cuts in the UK's emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, including emissions from aviation and shipping, and with annual targets along the way to keep us on track.
This really is an astonishing achievement. And you helped make this happen - thank you!

Planning
Our planning campaigns include contacting the Planning Departments of Woking, Guildford and Waverley BC's to ensure that the LDF's make adequate provision for climate change.
We also respond appropriately to planning for large developments which have an impact on sustainability.
Energy
We want individuals, businesses and public sector organisations to reduce the amount of energy they use and to switch to renewable sources of energy where possible in order to minimise greenhouse gas emissions and to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Woking and Guildford Borough Councils are successfully working towards producing more renewable energy locally and we support their efforts.
Waste
The best councils in Britain recycle over 40 percent of their waste. We want our areas to be the best recyclers in Britain. Surrey County Council have prepared a draft Waste Local Plan which sets low recycling targets and may wish to rely upon incineration to deal with excess household waste. We work very closely with GAIN (www.no-incinerator.org.uk ) to campaign against future incinerator plans.
Submissions have been sent in to Guildford and Waverley councils and to Surrey CC.
Woking and Waverley have now moved to fortnightly collections. Guildford is still in the process of moving to fortnightly collection.
GM and other Food Issues
We have been very successful in the past with talks, stalls and lobbying and we are still keeping an eye on how the picture is developing locally and internationally.
Several members are interested in developing organic gardening locally, possibly to supply other members.
'Food miles' is a very important talking point now and we support local farmers markets whenever possible. They are in Guildford, Woking Ripley and Milford on a monthly basis
