Energy use and Footprints

Save energy

Energy is cheap and painless – at least it is for us in the UK because we get it from a gas pipe, petrol pump or from an electricity socket. It’s on tap. Imagine if you had to walk miles to collect firewood and water (like millions of people do), or if you had to make a small ration of oil for lighting last many nights. You’d think more about energy wouldn’t you? Well, all that energy you use is causing greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere to increase, which is worsening global warming – so it is now time to think long and hard about energy. In fact it’s overdue!

Nearly every aspect of modern living uses energy. Nearly every individual and every household could easily reduce their energy usage by several percent without spending a penny. In some cases by much more.  To achieve bigger savings you’ll need to spend some money, but the good news is that most investments in saving energy give a decent financial return.

Where is energy consumed?

In the home– heating; hot water; cooking; lighting; and appliances

Transport– petrol/diesel for your car; public transport; taxis; and flying.

At work – heating, lighting, office equipment, industrial processes, transport etc
